Legislation that would add nearly 1,000 acres of federal land to the Pechanga Indian reservation will go before the House today. City officials are eager to get Pechanga Parkway widened and thought they were ready to go, but a new federal requirement might delay the project. So now city officials are considering passing on a $4 million federal highway grant to get it done without further delay. With California schools losing more of their budgets each year, the prospect of a good education for the state's children can sometimes look uncertain. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest County have elected Amy Minniear and Philip Pesin to its board, bringing the number of board members to 29. When asked what impact tribal gaming has had on local communities, most people probably think of the additional police and fire services that revenues from gaming help to support. But that's only the beginning. Tribal gaming is transforming the quality of life in Riverside County -- both on and off the reservations. On Thursday, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest County thanked Pechanga Resort and Casino for their continued support of the club by hosting the "Our Kids Rock" auction and dinner and for their premiere sponsorship of the event. Native people endure some common stereotypes: Drunk, lazy Indians get a free education, free housing, and are free from paying taxes. Think teenagers and eating, and the usual conclusion is fast food. But that's not necessarily so for members of Great Oak High School's Culinary Club.Bill would add land to reservation
